What are we looking for?

A strong contribution should have a clear philosophical centre and offer insight rather than mere opinion.

It may begin with an argument, problem, question, experience, work of art, public controversy, or something apparently ordinary. What matters is what philosophical thinking allows us to see, clarify, question, or understand.

Contributors should write for an intelligent general reader rather than a specialist audience.

What do we mean by applied philosophy?

We understand applied philosophy as philosophy that emerges from, illuminates, pertains to, or transforms lived experience.

A submission may explore a practice, profession, relationship, tradition, work, experiment, or ordinary experience, and ask what it reveals about human life, knowledge, virtue, meaning, or how we ought to live.

The journal welcomes work that demonstrates philosophy as inquiry, as practice, and as a way of life.

Work we seek

  • Is rooted in a real or lived experience.

  • Uses that experience to illuminate a philosophical question.

  • Connects thought with action.

  • Helps us understand, inhabit, or navigate the world more wisely.

  • May address an academic problem within philosophical scholarship.

  • Uses a philosophical method for inquiry.

Editorial Review

Styr operates an editorial review model rather than conventional blind academic peer review.

Submissions are reviewed by the editorial team and may also be read by external reviewers where appropriate.

We consider philosophical substance, clarity, originality, accessibility, and relevance to applied philosophy.

Forms and Lengths

Essays

Up to 3,000 words

Accessible, well-structured, philosophically substantial pieces with a clear question, idea, or argument.

8 Minute Thoughts

Up to 1,200 words

Shorter philosophical reflections built around a genuine insight, question, argument, experience, or contemporary issue.

Reviews & Responses

300 - 1,000 words

Philosophically engaged responses to books, films, exhibitions, lectures, podcasts, debates, scientific or technological developments, and other cultural material.

A review should ask what its subject helps us understand, what it challenges or obscures, and why it matters philosophically.
 

Miniatures

Styr may occasionally publish very short dialogues, parables, allegories, vignettes, flash fiction, or other compressed forms that operate as philosophical thought experiments.

We are not seeking general fiction.
